Course Goal:
To develop in students the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target
Course Length: 10 hours (The course length may vary depending on the instructor to student ratio and the participants’ abilities.
**Classroom and range locations wiil be determined depending on the State the course is held**
Curriculum:
LESSON I: Shotgun Knowledge and Safe Handling
- State the course goal and any special requirements for the five lessons
- Identify the principal parts of a shotgun and types of actions, and demonstrate how they
function
- State and explain the NRA rules for safe gun handling
- Explain and demonstrate how to handle shotguns in a safe manner
LESSON II: Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting
- Identify ammunition components and their functions
- Identify the proper ammunitions and its intended use
- Explain and demonstrate the five fundamentals of shooting a rifle
LESSON III: Firing the First Shot
- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely shoot a shotgun on a
range
- Safely shoot a moving using the five fundamentals of shotgun shooting
- Identify the materials needed to clean a shotgun
- Demonstrate how to clean a shotgun safely
LESSON IV: Shotgun and Shooting Skills Practical Exercise
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the NRA Shotgun Qualification Program
- Demonstrate progress in the refining basic shotgun shooting skills and
- earning the Pro-Marksman Award
LESSON V: Shotgun Games and Activities
- Identify several ways to pursue shotgun shooting activities after the course
- Identify criteria for selecting a shotgun
- Identify various shooting organizations and how to become involved with them
- Successfully pass the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course Examination
- Safely pursue and enjoy shotgun shooting activities to the best of their ability
